Football dog names are a great idea for a theme if you’re searching for just the right moniker for your new pup.

Football dog names are a great idea for a theme if you’re searching for just the right moniker for your new pup, if you ask us here at Dog O’Day (though we honestly could say that about a lot of things depending on which member of the staff you ask, including Disneyfood and Game of Thrones).

Anyway, with that in mind, and Super Bowl Sunday coming up, Rover.com crunched the numbers of their latest popular pet names survey to see what football related trends stood out.

Football itself as a name is up 200 percent, and hey, why not? The main Wishbone actor was a JRT named Soccer, and Wesley’s family once had an Australian Shepherd named Sport.  Fumble is up 100 percent, while Touchdown has dropped by a third.

Andy, possibly for Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, is up 250 percent, while Montana (after Joe, of course) is up 200 percent. (One of our staff dogs is Andy the Great Pyrenees.)

Levi, possibly after the Niners’ home of Levi’s Stadium, is up 68 percent, while Clark, potentially after Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, is up 600 percent. (It’s much more likely that Clark refers instead to Superman, and Levi the Golden Retriever was Sue’s service dog in the PAX TV series Sue Thomas FBEye.)

Mr Chips is up 50 percent, while other strong snack names include Dip and Pretzel. Guacamole is also up 25 percent, but this is a little odd, as avocados are poisonous to dogs (though they do make good commercials), so why would you name your pet after a poison?

Amusingly, alcohol-themed names are generally on the rise, as the straightforward Beer is up 1000 percent, while Coors, Gin and Whiskey have gained popularity. Bourbon has dropped nearly 70 percent, however.

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XVI will pit Team Ruff against Team Fluff at 3 p.m. ET, while Super Bowl LIV will take place on Fox at 6:40 p.m., pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers.

And finally as we wrap pup our facts about football dog names, Rover says that Joe Montana, who played for both San Francisco and Kansas City in his career, has more dogs named after him than any other player in the NFL Hall of Fame.
