Major Biden celebrates First Felines on International Cat Day
Major Biden isn’t just the First Dog – he’s also a thoughtful presidential pupper, so it makes since that his German Shepherd lineage would include appreciation for his cousin on International Cat Day.
Winston is technically his cousin (pawsibly? Family trees can get really complicated), but nevertheless rules the White House (as all cats rule their spaces, no matter what their canine siblings or human roommates say) as his owner is President Joe Biden’s granddaughter.
Major also gave a shoutout to one of his First Pets predecessors in Socks Clinton, who was the cat of President Bill Clinton.
Like Socks, Winston is also mostly black with white splashes of trim.
International Cat Day was celebrated by Major Biden on Twitter.

“Kitties are pawesome!” Major wrote alongside a picture of Socks Clinton. “He is now with Champ in pet heaven.”
Also, as with their Instagram, Winston Biden also made an appearance on the Oval Pawffice Twitter account as well.
“I know everyone is waiting to meet the new White House kitty, but for now you’ll have to settle for me,” Winston captioned his post. “As the only Biden kitty, I am First Cat de facto.”
“de facto” is Latin for “in fact,” so Winston is a brilliant linguist, which is fitting for a pet in such a position of power.
Socks lived to be nearly 20 years old, though he did not live with the Clinton family after they left the White House. He was named after a character in a Beverly Cleary novel.
While most presidents have had dogs as First Pets, the first known President to have cats was Abraham Lincoln, who had two named Dixie and Tabby; he may have said that Dixie “was smarter than my whole cabinet.”
