Christmas is nearly here and at Dog O’Day we are celebrating the lead up to the holiday with 12 Days of Dogmas! And this time our celebration is all about the movies.

When it comes times for the holidays, we all know about the Hallmark Christmas movies, the classics like National Lampoon Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Carol (to name a few), but we are all about the dogs here so we want holiday movies with dogs.

For this year’s Dogmas, I went on a hunt to see which movies featuring dogs was a must for the holidays. And yes, there are some obvious ones that we just have to have, but hopefully we inspire you to pick a movie just because of the dog/s.

5 Christmas movies with dogs to watch in time for the 12 Days of Dogmas

  • The Grinch (2018) – Don’t get me wrong, there is something special about the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas animated movie/program. However, I am in love with the 2018 The Grinch movie. The Grinch himself is ridiculously cute (whether we are looking at baby Grinch or adult Grinch) and so is Max. In fact, 2018 Max is so cute that we can’t help but single him out as the best Max of all the Maxes! That hair, his ability to be there for his Grinch, his attitude – all of it makes him the best holiday pup of them all.
  • A Dog Named Christmas – Based on a story written by Greg Kincaid, this movie is truly a beautiful take on the idea of “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” In the movie, a shelter is running an adoption drive for the holidays, and a young man with developmental issues sets out to make sure as many of these dogs get their forever homes as possible. It’s as much about the dogs as it is the people of this community and the joy that a little love can spread.
  • An All Dogs Christmas Carol – If you love animated movies of the late 1980s and early 1990s, then you’ve probably seen All Dogs Go To Heaven. It is perhaps one of the more iconic animated movies about dogs out there. But did you know that there was a holiday movie sequel? If not, then this is a must watch! While All Dogs Go To Heaven has always been a movie that made us cry, there is something about coming back to see these characters once again that we can’t resist. And this holiday special will definitely remind you that dogs really are angels with four paws.
  • Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You – This is a super cute animated movie that revolves around the iconic song by Mariah Carey. But in this case, all a young Mariah wants is a puppy! And we completely understand that feeling. We want a puppy for Christmas too! This is a fun little adventure with a mischievous puppy and a little girl who wants to prove that she is responsible enough to have a puppy of her own.
  • Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure – I will admit that as someone born in the middle of the 1980s, movies like Beethoven, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and more are pure nostalgia. So if we can point people towards holiday movies based off of those classics, we are here for it. In this case, it is all about Beethoven. In this case, the holiday movie sees Beethoven trying to help Santa and one of his elves in order to save Christmas. It is a fun adventure that brings the classic shenanigans of the original Beethoven movies, but with the added magic of Santa, a lost bag of toys, and an Elf who may need a reminder about what not to do with Santa’s sleigh.

Have you watched these five Christmas dog movies? Will you be giving any of them a watch for yourself? What’s your favorite holiday movie with a dog as a main part of the storyline?
