First Dogs pay tribute to canine military heroes on Memorial Day

On May 31, we celebrated Memorial Day, and while for the most part we are paying tribute to the humans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms, there have also been plenty of canines who have put their lives on the line as well. And on The Oval Pawffice social media account, the First Dogs took the time to pay tribute to the Military Working Dogs who have lost their lives for our freedom as well.

In the post shared to their Instagram account, the First Dogs shared a series of pictures of Military Working Dogs that also included a memorial for United States War Dogs. However, it was the message included in their post that really got to us.

Paying tribute to these canine heroes, our First Dogs said,

"This #MemorialDay Weekend, we woof like to ask our friends to take a moment and pay their respects to all the canine military heroes who lost their lives in action. We hope that soon, technology will make it so that innocent doggos are no longer needed in war theaters."

The First Dogs paid tribute to Military Working Dogs for Memorial Day

When it comes to celebrating Memorial Day, we really appreciate the First Dogs for doing their part to remind people of the sacrifice that so many dogs have made as well. And it is because of them that we learned that there is actually a day set aside for our canine veterans (it’s because of the First Dogs that we did some digging into whether or not there was a day set aside for our working dogs at all).

According to Military.com, March 13 is set aside as National K9 Veterans Day. And it seems that this is not just a day to honor Military Working Dogs, but all working dogs, as the holiday is described as, “a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history.”

While there may be a day to celebrate the dogs who have done so much for us, we appreciate the fact that they are also being remembered on Memorial Day alongside the humans they fought with and for.
