Dogs are known as man's best friends and even Superman has his very own furry friend in the form of Krypto.

Krypto first appeared in 1955 and since then, has had his own rise to fame. For the most part, though, we all picture an animated version of Krypto. Most recently, there was an animated film in 2022 called DC League of Super-Pets. This time, he was voiced by Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, and honestly, what a choice that was.

He also appeared in Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! which was an animated film released in 2023. As you can see, Krypto has made his rounds as an animated character. As we all know, Krypto is going to be in James Gunn's Superman and that's been a huge discussion since the movie was announced especially since Gunn has talked about his own rescue as the inspiration for Krypto.

Given how much excitement and hype there is about Krypto's upcoming appearance, it does bring up a larger question about Krypto and the trends we've seen in other superhero films.

Will Krypto become a mainstay in James Gunn's DC era?

Since Krypto is such a beloved character already, this is an exciting question to ponder. Even the glimpse of him shared in the trailer has DC fans and dog lovers excited. There's also the commentary James Gunn has made about Krypto. While this has been discussed before, it's still something I think about regularly.

Gunn was quoted as saying: "His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer." If anything, this gives me hope that we'll see more of Krypto in the future. Not only will we learn more about him in Superman, but it truly wouldn't surprise me if Krypto got his own series.

While nothing has been confirmed by DC on that front, seeing Krypto helm a series again would be excellent. Plus it feels like superheroes' pets never get the love they deserve. DC has already unveiled a line of Krypto products which feels like an excellent test. If the items sell well, then why not expand it even further? The real test is going to be how fans react when they go see Superman and see how large Krypto's role in the film truly is.

It's clear DC tested the waters with Krypto and his appearance at the Puppy Bowl which fans seemed to appreciate. Either way, it's clear Krypto is here to stay for now and that's something to be excited about.
