While cats are known for their independent nature and their ability as hunters, there is also a reputation that black cats have that is less than great. In a lot of ways, we know that black cats have a bad rep because of the myths associated with them.

Around Halloween, the reputation that black cats have can actually be a bit problematic. And that is why we reached out to an expert to get some information about what pet owners should know about their black cats when it comes to the spooky season holiday.

Specifically, we wanted to know what should people who own black cats be aware of during Halloween? Thankfully, a Veterinary Consultant for Embrace Pet Insurance, Dr. Liza Cahn, had an answer for us.

What should black cat owners know this Halloween?

With Halloween happening this week, we wanted to know what black cat owners should be mindful of when it comes to their furry friends.

"Owners of black cats should be particularly cautious during Halloween. Due to the persistent superstitions surrounding black cats, they can be at higher risk of mistreatment or harm as some may target them based on the false belief that they bring bad luck or have ties to witchcraft. It's advisable for owners to keep black cats indoors during this time to protect them from potential threats or pranks. Additionally, increased foot traffic and the presence of unfamiliar visitors during Halloween festivities can be stressful for cats, so providing a quiet, safe space for them is also beneficial."

All things considered, we are all about keeping our pets safe and happy. And if that means being extra vigilant, then that's what we will do. And obviously, we don't want to see our cats being hurt due to a prank or even something more vicious.

Are you at all surprised by the fact that there are dangers for black cats, especially around Halloween? How do you protect your cat during a holiday where people are potentially coming to your door over the course of a few hours?
