Have you heard of Camp Bow Wow? If you aren’t familiar with them, they are one of the largest doggy daycares in the country. On top of being a regular doggy daycare, they also offer boarding facilities.

With more than 400,000 campers being part of the Camp Bow Wow family, it makes sense that they know what some of the most popular dog breeds are across the U.S. And, unlike some lists released, their numbers are based on not only pure breeds, but also mixed breed dogs.

When compiling their lists of most popular dog breeds, Camp Bow Wow takes into account both their pure breed dogs and their mixed breed dogs, using the primary breed of a mixed pup to actually work into their tallies. This means that while these top 5 lists are breed specific, they do include mixed pups who may not be represented otherwise.

So what exactly are the top 5 large dog breeds according to the campers attending Camp Bow Wow doggy daycares and boarding?

Camp Bow Wow shares the top 5 large dog breeds

  1. Labrador Retriever (The Labrador Retriever seems to make most popular breed lists, no matter who is compiling it or how they do the counts.)
  2. Goldendoodle (It turns out that when you put a Poodle and a Golden Retriever together, you end up with a super popular dog.)
  3. Golden Retriever (Not surprised by this at all.)
  4. German Shepherd (This breed is very popular for a lot of reasons, including their ability to be used as guard dogs, working dogs, and even service dogs.)
  5. Australian Shepherd (This was a bit of a surprise, even if we think these pups are super cute.)

For the most part, this list of popular large breed dogs is actually pretty much what we expected to see. The biggest surprises on the list were the Australian Shepherd and the Goldendoodle. And the Goldendoodle was mostly a surprise because technically this is a mixed breed.
