Dachshunds have way more than one speed
Recently, there was a TikTok video from Mother of Sausages showing a cute AF dachshund who would not pick up the pace when walking across a room. This brought up the question: do Dachshunds have more than one speed?
Well, as Dog O’ Day’s resident Dachshund owner, I am here to say that the answer is yes, they do. They have three speeds.
The Stubborn Speed
The Stubborn speed is familiar to many a Dachshund parent. But it’s not really a speed per se. It’s more of an attitude. This is the speed when your Dachshund is laying on the couch, bed, or floor and wants to stay there. They will not move. No matter how many snacks you offer, no matter how many belly rubs you give, and no matter how many kisses you smooch on their face, they will not move. They are now a permanent fixture.
This is the same speed my Dachshund uses when she is done walking. It usually occurs in the middle of a walk outside. She just stops and sits in the middle of the sidewalk and I have to carry her back home because otherwise, we are just stuck there.
The Normal Speed
The normal speed is what you saw in the viral TikTok video. Just the normal Dachshund waddle. It’s not slow, but it’s not exactly fast either. Although, for a dog with such short legs, it probably feels pretty fast to them.

This is the speed Dachshunds usually use when walking down the sidewalk, heading to their food or water bowl, leaving the vet (they use the stubborn speed when going to the vet), and when they see another Dachshund they want to meet.
The Zoomie Speed
Like most dogs, Dachshunds do zoomies. It’s the fastest they can possibly go. When my dog does zoomies, she runs from the front door, through the kitchen, back through the bedroom, and then back again. If you didn’t hear her nails clicking on the floor, you would almost miss her she is going so fast. She also occasionally does this outside but only when her Beagle cousins are around.
This may also be the speed your Dachshund uses when they hear or smell their food being made, when they hear the crinkle of the snack bag, or when they detect the opening of the refrigerator. Do I need to mention that Dachshunds love food? Probably not.
