Dog Food Toppers: What are they and what is the benefit for our dogs?
What exactly are Dog Food Toppers?
Have you noticed the new addition of a product called Dog Food Toppers in the pet food aisle of your local grocery store? Have you wondered what it is? We were curious too, so we did some digging of our own.
While Dog Food Toppers are basically just packets or cups of wet dog food (maybe not the ground meat type, but more the slices in gravy), it is actually a way to add more moisture to your pups food. It is also a great way to get your pup to eat a bit more if they need it. Typically, these are used to top dry dog food and it adds more nutrients to your pup’s diet.
According to Chewy, “food toppers are primarily intended to enhance the palatability and nutrition of regular dog food, some can also double as a complete and balanced meal.” And this makes perfect sense when you really look at the packets of toppers.

The actual benefits of using Dog Food Toppers
Now that we have a better idea of what Dog Food Toppers are, it makes sense to look at their actual benefits. Beyond helping to make your dog’s regular dog food more palatable (if they aren’t necessarily a fan of their food), these toppers add more nutrition to the mix as well. It can also help those picky eaters to actually eat a bit more of their meals, which is always a plus for those pups who need to supplement their diet.
In some cases, the Dog Food Toppers also work to add more moisture to your pup’s diet, which is also important. That added water content can be a bonus in dogs with kidney problems for example. And sometimes, these toppers even include supplements and vitamins that can help older dogs and dogs with health issues.
And even if you aren’t adding these toppers to add moisture or as a dietary addition to the mix, they can just be used as a small treat for our pups. Basically, they are a way to add a little bit more to your pup’s meal time, and we would never say no to that (especially if it means spoiling our very good boys and girls).
