Broadway Barks Across America helps find shelter pets homes.

Broadway Barks Across America was a livestreamed event as stage and screen celebrities helped to find shelter pets forever homes.

While usually a live event held on Shubert Alley, this year it was a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was previously reported on by People Magazine, and streamed live on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

Celebs touting the benefits of dog adoption included Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, Glengarry Glen Ross), Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, Thor: Ragnarok), Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Whoopi Goldberg (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Eddie, Sister Act) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) were among the special guests.

(Miranda’s dog Tobillo had an indirect role in helping compose and write two of the Hamilton songs, “Dear Theodosia” and “The World is Wide Enough.” Click on the link in the above paragraph to learn more.)

Broadway Barks was founded in the late 1990s by Bernadette Peters (The Witch from Into the Woods, Lily St Regis in original 1982 Annie movie) and Mary Tyler Moore, known for her self-titled sitcom and The Dick Van Dyke Show.

“I’m excited to be pivoting to an online, streaming event this year,” Peters said in a press release. “We are able to share more animal stories from more shelters across America, with more people, all from the safety and comfort of their own homes.”

As the organization’s website states, “originally conceived as a program to promote the adoption of shelter animals, Broadway Barks has evolved from an annual event to an organization that extends beyond the plight of homeless animals.”

Broadway Barks Across America was produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
