Have you ever made an amazing dish that featured onions, even in a small way, and contemplated giving your dog a taste? If so, you may be wondering about dog safety when it comes to feeding them onions.

Whether you made a delicious dish that you thought about letting your dog finish off or your pup accidentally got their teeth on something you made, you might be wondering about dog safety when it comes to the different ingredients in a dish.

While most of us already know that things like grapes and chocolate are bad for our dogs, they are not the only foods that our pups should be avoiding. And if you cook a lot, then you probably keep onions and things like onion powder on hand.

When it comes to dog safety, you probably want to know whether or not it is safe for your pup to eat onions. Unfortunately, the answer is no. It is definitely not safe for your dog to be eating onions.

More from Dog of the Day

According to Dog Time, dogs who eat onions even in small quantities can find themselves suffering from onion poisoning. And depending on how much they ingested, they can end up showing symptoms almost immediately or it can take a few days.

Among the symptoms that a dog with onion poisoning might experience are:

  • Dark Urine
  • Gums that have gone paler than normal
  • Throwing up
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heart rate that is elevated
  • Uncoordinated movements

Ultimately, it is important to note that it does not matter if your pup ate something with chopped onions, onion powder, or any other variation of onion, as it is all dangerous to your pup’s health. This is because there is a chemical found in onions that is toxic to dogs, it attacks the oxygen molecules found in your pup’s red blood cells. And this chemical has even been known to trick the body into attacking the red blood cells.

When it comes to dog safety, it is clear that onions are exceptionally bad for our pup’s health. And it is extremely important to know this before we start feeding our dogs leftovers.

The last thing we want to do is accidentally poison our pups!

If you think your dog has eaten onions, it is important to reach out to your veterinarian to let them know. And if you have an idea of how much they have eaten, let them know that as well. Your vet may ask you to bring your pup in to get their stomach pumped or they may have you watch your pup to make sure that they do not suffer from any of the symptoms of onion poisoning.
