How accurate were our 2020 WKC Dog Show picks?

How accurate were our 2020 WKC Dog Show picks this year? While Siba the Poodle (registered name GCHP CH Stone Run Afternoon Tea) won the 144th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina on Tuesday night in front of a national audience on Fox Sports 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, not all of our staff predictions were totally off, which is something, considering that there are around 200 AKC-recognized breeds and varieties competing.

In the Herding Group, Wesley said the Shetland Sheepdog would be victorious, and lo and behold, Conrad the Sheltie (officially CHCG CH Syringa-Akadia The Corsair) took the class.

In the Hound Group, Wesley said the Whippet would win, and Bourbon (GHCG Pinnacle Kentucky Bourbon) captured the group win. Kimberley said the Greyhound would win, and while that didn’t come true, three of the four ribbon-winners were sighthounds.

In the Non-Sporting Group, Wesley said the Dalmatian would win out of a sympathy vote for their being excluded from the Super Bowl 54 commercials, while Kimberley went with the Bulldog. Here she won, as the Bulldog was given the third-place white ribbon.

When it came to the Sporting Group, Wesley said that the Golden Retriever streak would continue, which it did, as 2019 NDS winner Daniel won the group and became the Internet’s favorite before retiring immediately afterwards. Kimberley said the Vizsla would win, which earned the fourth-place yellow ribbon.

While Wesley said the Jack Russell Terrier would zoom to the top (they didn’t), Kimberley picked the Welsh Terrier to triumph in the Terrier group, where it came in second.

Kimberley picked the Pug in the Toy Group, while Wesley went with the Papillon. Neither of these breeds placed.

In the Working Group, Wesley picked the Rottweiler while Kimberley went with the Samoyed, which earned fourth in class.

While Wesley would win our staff competition with three points as opposed to Kimberley’s two points overall (assuming one point for a win, .75 for second, .50 for third and ..25 for fourth), she won going by overall placings, as four of her six picks earned ribbons.

The next major event on the conformation calendar will be the 2020 Beverly Hills Dog Show will air on NBC on Sunday, April 5.
