In a recent feature piece talking about fashion and perfume, Emma Stone discusses her latest transformation into Cruella de Vil.

When it comes to interesting origin stories, none are quite as fascinating as that of Cruella de Vil. What was it that made her a fashion hungry villain willing to skin Dalmatians for their fur? And while we don’t have the answer to this question just yet, with the help of Emma Stone, we finally will.

Although we do not expect to see the Cruella origin movie until 2021, that doesn’t mean we aren’t learning new things. In a recent feature for Vogue, Stone had the chance to talk about not only her personal fashion and perfume choices, but also her transformation into the iconic villain. (And while I might be a makeup lover, my focus was entirely on how the actress feels about her role as Cruella, and what it is like to bring the character to life.)

As Emma Stone pointed out, and we all agree with, Cruella de Vil is a “larger than life” character, which is what makes getting to play the villain so much fun. According to the actress, “It’s been a great experience to play around with her back story and discover what makes her the woman she becomes in the story we’ve seen.”

In terms of who Cruella is in her new movie, we are getting to see her before her actions in 101 Dalmatians. This also means that we are getting a different look at her fashion and who she was before the iconic black and white hair.

Based on what we have seen so far, this includes red hair, punk rock boots, and even makeup that pops with “sooty eyeliner.” Considering the story is set in the 1970s, this look makes perfect sense. We are talking about an era where punk rock lived and styles were much different.

With the help of impressive hair and makeup designs, Emma Stone and the rest of the Cruella team was able to create an entire persona for who the villain was before her truly villainous days. And this is something we can’t wait to see in action on our screens.

It feels like May 2021 can’t come soon enough.
