Disney has given us some downright classics, and one movie that got some major hours in my house was A Goofy Movie. As a kid, I specifically remember my parents putting in the VHS tape and watching it over and over again.
That's why I was shocked to learn that the film was turning 30 years old. It feels like it was only just yesterday that I had been watching it dozens of times. That's why I had to do a Rewind Review, which is a chance for me to go back and rewatch some childhood films I loved.
If you've never watched A Goofy Movie, it's currently streaming on Disney+, so you have no excuse not to watch it. If you have and need a refresher, then no worries. The film follows Goofy, who is a single dad, wanting to feel close to his son, Max again. However, Max has other plans as he's a teenager and wants to do his own thing.
Things come to a head when Max gets in trouble, and Goofy decides to take him on a fishing trip as a way for the two to connect. From the start, it's clear that Max is a less-than-willing participant and Goofy is just trying to share some of his most-loved childhood memories with his son.
A Goofy Movie impresses all these years later
On the surface, a movie about Goofy doesn't seem like it'd be so meaningful. From the very start, though, the film sets the tone early. We're here to learn more about Goofy, his son, Max, and what their relationship is like. Honestly, it's something many viewers will ponder when thinking of being a teenager and acting a certain way towards your parents.
What makes the movie so memorable is that we see this other side of Goofy and can appreciate him as a parent. As a kid, most of us probably sided with Max. As adults, it's much easier to see Goofy's perspective and see that he was just trying his best. He was looking for a way to feel connected to his son without pushing him away.
While you might not remember how heartwarming the film is, the songs are sure to be something you remember. Some of the biggest hits from the film include "Stand Out, "I2I," and "On the Open Road," among many others. There is something so fun and iconic about these songs that we're all still singing and dancing to them now. Plus, we're all hoping for a real Powerline concert at some point, right?
No matter if you're revisiting A Goofy Movie for the first time in 30 years or are introducing it to your favorite young Disney fan, you're bound to be surprised by just how amazing it is. While most of us remember watching it and loving it, it's so much more than you remember.
