There are certain films you watch and know they're going to have an impact on you. As a child, I vividly remember watching A Goofy Movie and really enjoying it. That was the day of VHS tapes and taking naps which are sadly behind me.
However, the one thing that hasn't wavered is my love for A Goofy Movie. Originally released in 1995, the film is turning 30 years old this year. Given that it's such a huge milestone, it was only right to go back and revisit some topics related to the movie.
Starting things off, we're looking at the theatrical release of A Goofy Movie. As mentioned, the film was released in April 1995. The film was directed by Kevin Lima who went on to direct gems including Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians, and Enchanted. As you can see, this was just the start of Lima's career as a director.
Looking at IMDB, the estimated budget for A Goofy Movie was $18,000,000. While it might seem like a lot, we have to think about all the work that goes into animation, the cast, crew and so much more. If anything, I thought it would be a little bit more.
Was A Goofy Movie a box office success?
IMDB goes on to share what the film grossed in both the US and Canada which was $35,348,597 which seems great. It's almost double the film's budget and adding in the global numbers only adds a few thousand more. It's clear this film was enjoyed by US and Canadian viewers which makes sense.
While the film wasn't as successful at the box office as Disney might have predicted, many saw it on home video and loved it. Since then, it's become a favorite for many millennial Disney lovers and is one viewers have grown to love and appreciate. Frankly, it doesn't seem like it'd be nearly as successful when you think about the concept.
However, Disney managed to put together a fun and heartfelt film while also making it a great one for viewers of all ages. There's excellent music, a great story, and a performance we can't help but all think of. It even spawned a sequel which wasn't as good but is still worth the watch. Honestly, the box office feels like nothing in comparison to the lasting legacy of the film.
The good news is that 30 years later, we can now stream A Goofy Movie and its sequel on Disney+.
