Owning a dog can be expensive. Not only is there the cost of actually adopting or purchasing your new dog, but there are also all the other costs associated with being a pet owner.

From vet visits to food, treats, and more, there are a lot of expenses that go along with being a dog owner. And yet, there are still some dog breeds that stand head and shoulders over the rest in terms of how much it may cost you to actually own a specific pup.

3 of the most expensive dog breeds in the world as of 2024

Hands down the Tibetan Mastiff is considered one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. And there are multiple reasons for this. One thing to note is that the cost of actually adopting or purchasing one of these pups is the main reason they are so expensive.

"The Tibetan mastiff is often considered the most expensive dog since the breed has sold for up to millions of dollars. In 2014, a Tibetan mastiff puppy was reportedly sold for nearly $2 million in China in 2014."

This doesn't even take into account how large these dogs are, the amount of fur they have, and other key factors that will increase the cost of their actual care as well.

However, on average the Tibetan Mastiff will more likely come in at around $4000, which is definitely more reasonable that almost $2 million.

Another dog breed that is at the top of the chart for cost is the English Bulldog. These amazing pups typically have a cost of $4250 when purchasing a puppy from a breeder. And there have also been times when these pups can go for even more than that.

And just like with the Tibetan Mastiff, the cost of actually owning an English Bulldog goes up once you take into account vet bills and food costs. While that is the case with any pet, there is something to be said about the fact that their flatter face structure can lead to more health issues than say a Labrador Retriever. Plus, they are prone to skin conditions that can also become costly.

The third dog on our list here is the Chow Chow. These purple tongue beauties can run a pretty penny as well, with an average cost of $4000. This is another dog breed that hails from China and has a very long and fascinating history.

Considered to be a very old and rare breed, there have been instances where people have paid in excessive of $11,000 for one of these pups based on their fur color. And since they are known as a symbol of wealth, that makes perfect sense.

As someone who grew up with Chow Chows, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for these fluffy beauties. And I completely understand why people would be willing to pay in excessive of $10,000 just to have one of these fierce and loyal protectors in their home.

With all three of these breeds, there are a lot of factors that go into their cost. Not only is it about the breed itself, but also some of the features, such as their coat color can impact how much a breeder might charge for one of these furry friends.
