How likely is it that black cats will be adopted from shelters?

Earlier this year, we here at Dog O'Day talked about how black dogs struggle to get adopted from shelters. In part, we talked about the struggles that some darker colored dogs had getting chosen at shelters and rescues, with the term "Black Dog Syndrome" having been coined to discuss this phenomenon.

Considering the research we have been doing on black cats, it likely makes sense that we would want to know if this same phenomenon was happening with the darker colored felines as well. In doing our research on black cats, we asked Dr. Liza Cahn of Embrace Pet Insurance whether or not black cats were more or less likely to be adopted.

And we were actually not that surprised by her answer, in light of the research we had already done on black dogs at shelters. So what did Dr. Cahn have to say?

Are black cats more or less likely to be adopted when found at shelters and rescues?

Unfortunately for black cats, it seems as if they are in the same boat as black dogs. It really does seem like the dark color of their fur is a hindrance to them finding a forever home.

"Black cats tend to have lower adoption rates and higher euthanasia rates compared to cats of other colors. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as "black cat bias," may be influenced by several factors. The negative superstitions associated with black cats can deter potential adopters, who might choose cats with different coat colors due to these unfounded beliefs. Furthermore, black cats often do not photograph as well as lighter-colored animals, which can make them less appealing on online adoption platforms where visual impact is crucial. Efforts like education campaigns, special adoption events, and promotions, especially during Black Cat Awareness Month in October, aim to combat these biases and encourage more people to adopt black cats"

We appreciate that Dr. Cahn explained how difficult it can be for black cats to find a new home. But we want to know what you think. Did you know that black cats struggle to find their forever homes?
