Over the last few years, the French Bulldog has increased in popularity to the point where it has actually knocked the Labrador Retriever out of the top spot for most popular dog breed. Part of that comes from its wins at national dog shows, but the other part is this breed is quite cute and on the smaller side. There’s something to be said about small to medium size dogs, especially if you have a small apartment or don’t have a lot of room, but still want a canine companion.
But just because the French Bulldog is popular, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the right dog breed for you. Not only is it important to consider the expenses related to this breed, but their temperament and their needs are very important to consider before deciding to adopt one of these pups.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), “French Bulldogs are smart, social, and affectionate companions. Frenchies are eager to please their owners, and they would be happy living with single adults, couples, or families.”
Should you bring home a French Bulldog?
Now, while all of these attributes might make you think that this dog is perfect for you, there are other things to consider. And yes, this includes how much they will cost both to bring home with you and over their lifetime. However, the other thing that should be considered is that they will require a certain level of upkeep to keep them healthy and happy. They tend to need weekly brushings and their skin folds/wrinkles need to be cleaned and dried regularly.
Another thing to think about is just how active you are. While French Bulldogs don’t need as much physical activity as some dog breeds, such as Border Collies, Huskies and Dalmatians, they do need a moderate amount of activity. And they definitely need some mental stimulation as well. So if you live a more sedentary lifestyle, it could be good to have a French Bulldog to get you out of the house, well also not requiring you to take five mile hikes every day.
Overall, this dog breed is very friendly and social. They get along well with children, other dogs, and even cats. Perhaps the biggest issue with owning a French bulldog is going to be cost. This can be a cost prohibitive breed, depending on their overall health. However, in general, this is a very versatile pup, that will get along with everyone and everything. They train well, and tend to be food motivated.
Honestly, if you are a fan of this particular dog breed, then you may want to consider adopting a French Bulldog. They definitely have a lot going for them. Just be mindful of the fact that they do have health conditions that need to be addressed at times, and there are certain care instructions that you should be mindful of as well. Basically, their temperament makes them the perfect dog for just about anyone.
