Picking the right dog for you and your family can be a challenge. Every dog breed is going to be a little bit different than the next. Different dogs have different temperaments and different needs that need to be considered. So when it comes to picking the perfect pup, there are quite a few things that you should know about the dog breed that you are choosing before you bring them home.

At the 2024 National Dog Show, which airs on Thanksgiving day, a Pug made history by winning best in show. And as we watched Vito the Pug earn the top spot at this particular dog show, we felt like this could give a boost to this breed of dog. After all, when a French Bulldog won the same competition before, it seemed to give an added boost to that dog breed’s popularity.

Considering the history of dogs winning best in show at the National Dog Show, we wanted to know the ins and outs of being a Pug owner. Luckily for us, the AKC is more than happy to breakdown everything we need to know about owning a Pug.

Is the Pug the ideal dog for you?

Honestly, it sounds like the Pug might just be the perfect pet. They are known for being an “ideal house dog.” Not only that, but they are also described as being very sweet and lovable. These small dogs are truly companion pups. They want your affection and they have no problem giving it back.

This breed is said to be small (they are in the toy group after all), but rather sturdy. They can handle themselves well, however, there are certain health considerations that should be considered before bringing a Pug home. This means that while the Pug could be the perfect pup for you, you will want to pay attention to possible future issues. So what are those issues?

According to the AKC, “Pugs’ bright, wide eyes are prone to problems including corneal ulcers and dry eye. Prospective owners should note that Pugs do poorly in hot, humid weather.” However, beyond their health issues, they seem pretty perfect.

Not only is the Pug a very adaptable and sturdy dog, but they are known to get along well with both children and older adults. Like we said earlier, they are companion dogs. They like affection and they like to play.

This is a dog breed that is all about love. They love other dogs, they love humans, and many Pugs that we have met even like cats. They just want to be loved and give love. It actually makes them one of the better breeds for most people considering a smaller dog. Perhaps the biggest consideration when it comes to adopting a Pug is understanding that they may have some health issues that need to be addressed in the future.

We have interacted with a number of Pugs over the years, and every single time they have been really sweet and energetic. They liked a good cuddle, as much as they enjoyed playing fetch and going for a walk. If you are someone who enjoys going for a stroll, this dog might be perfect for you. If you enjoy affection, then this dog is exactly what you need in your life.
