We already know that dogs should not be left home alone for longer than an average of eight to nine hours, but what about cats? How long can cats safely be left alone?

Honestly, it’s a question we’ve never really thought about. And we know how bad that sounds, but we often compare dogs to cats, and have always leaned towards the idea that if a dog should only be left alone for up to nine hours, then it’s likely that cat should only be left alone for that long as well.

In general, we all know that felines are a very independent creature. We love them, but for the most part they do what they want. So what does that mean for how long they can be left home alone?

According to Newsweek, it seems that there are a few things to consider when it comes to how long your cat can be left alone. And yes, some of the things to consider include how old they are and their actual temperament. Because no two cats are alike.

Here is how long cats can be left home alone

Although we might compare dogs and cats, the reality is that you don’t have to be concerned if you happen to be away for the night because your cat will be okay. However, if you are thinking about leaving your cat home alone for longer than a night, you should be considering things like their health and feeding schedule.

According to a cat trainer, “Most cats should be okay on their own for a maximum of two nights, provided that their meals are being delivered by a cat sitter.” Of course, if you have an older cat, a cat with a health condition, or even a kitten, then one night is probably the maximum.

While you may be able to have an overnight away from your cat, anything longer than that should really be properly planned out. And proper planning might include making sure that there is a cat sitter coming in to check on your furry friend.

Unlike dogs, cats may not need quite as much attention, but that does not mean that they don’t need us at all. Cats may seem independent, but they still rely on you for basic necessities. In particular, it’s really all about the feeding schedule. Making sure that your cat has what they need is important to consider when planning any length of time away from home.

Are you at all surprised by how long your cat can be left home alone? Is this something you’ve thought about in the past?
