When it comes to pets, most people think of cats and dogs. In 2023 though, that definition has vastly widened.

In a recent study from TrustedHousesitters, there have been plenty of different trends when it comes to having a pet. In particular, a lot of people are opting for a more unique pet.

Whether it be birds, reptiles, or more, there has been a growth in different types of pets and the survey even broke it down by state. In addition, there are lots of unique trends when it comes to owning a pet.

Being a pet parent isn’t always easy but it can be incredibly rewarding and this study proves that.

Let’s start with something you might not realize and that’s which pets have become more popular since 2018. It’s been 5 years so that’s a good sampling with the top three being the Box Turtle, the Crested Gecko, and lastly, the Ball Python. This is such a unique mix of pets so this doesn’t come as a surprise. Plus, these are likely cheaper to keep around than the typical dog or cat.

Moving onto the most popular pets in the US, the top three is another surprising mix which includes a rabbit, an American Quarter Horse, and Leopard Gecko. There are certain animals that are more popular in certain states such as Hawaii. In Hawaii, there are more pet ducks than in any other state.

In addition, the data also showed that reptiles are on the rise when it comes to owning a unique pet. Ultimately, I think it depends on what you consider a unique pet as horses aren’t considered unique pets in some places yet they are in others. Either way, it’s all based on where you live and your definition of a unique pet.
