We all know that the French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in the US, but have you ever wondered what’s the difference between that breed and a classic Bulldog?
Thanks to the American Kennel Club, we know that the Bulldog ranks sixth in popularity versus the French Bulldog which sits in the number one spot. Both pups are extremely popular, which makes sense since these dogs are both good with children (although it is recommended that Bulldogs have supervision around new children).
But what are their personalities? For the Frenchie, we are looking at a pup that is adaptable, smart, and playful, while the classic Bulldog is calm, courageous, and friendly. Both pups have excellent personalities and that adds to their appeal as pets.
In terms of size, the French Bulldog is considered to be a small dog, whereas a regular Bulldog is actually a medium sized dog. Height-wise the Frenchie is between 11 and 13 inches versus the Bulldog’s 14 to 15 inches. And when it comes to weight, the Frenchie is generally under 28 pounds, whereas Bulldogs will weigh about 40 pounds for females and 50 pounds for males.
What’s the difference between a French Bulldog and a Bulldog?
Wondering about the life expectancy of both of these dog breeds? French Bulldogs have an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, while Bulldogs on the other hand live between eight and 10 years.
Other things to note when it comes to these two breeds is that they are both easy to train, but at the same time Bulldogs will bark when they feel like they must, while the Frenchie is considered to be an “infrequent” barker.
Both of these breeds require regular exercise and they are both known to be seasonal shedders, which means when the seasons change, so do their coats. For a Bulldog, they need to be brushed two or three times every week. In comparison, a Frenchie is good with an “occasional bath/brush.” This means that the French Bulldog is much easier in terms of their grooming needs.
Honestly, there are definitely some differences between these two breeds, especially when looking at their physical appearance and size. But at the same time, it was interesting to see just how alike they are as well. Clearly, they each have their own unique attributes that make them good for different people and they also have their own needs when it comes to grooming. However, we were definitely surprised by some of the similarities, including how easy they are to train and even the fact that they both have the same activity levels.
Are you surprised by how these breeds stack up in this comparison? Did you expect there to be more differences between the two breeds? Was there anything that didn’t surprise you in terms of the way these two dog breeds stack up next to each other?
