Poodles are probably one of the most iconic and identifiable dog breeds out there. With their ever-so-classic doggy “afros” and super long legs, it’s no secret when you see a Poodle.

They’re super fluffy and seem super cute, but what else is there to know about them? What’s their history? Where do Poodles originate from? What are some fun facts about ’em?

In terms of history, the Poodle originates from Germany and France. There are certain sources that say that they originate in Germany and other sources that say that they originate in France. In terms of where they get their shapes, coats, and sizes from, Dogtime states that the Poodle is a seeming cross between many different other dog breeds, such as European Water Dogs, Russian Water Dogs, also including their main ancestors of the North African Barbet, which was originally imported within/to The Iberian Peninsula.

Last month, The American Kennel Club did a breed-related spotlight on the Poodle over on their Instagram. Within that post, they featured many different photos and just a few little fun facts. One thing that was mentioned was that there were three different official sizes.

Toy Poodles

Average Size/Height: 10 inches

Average Weight: 4 – 6 lbs.

Life Expectancy: 10 – 18 years

  • They are super affectionate and good with children
  • They are open to meeting strangers and are excellent watch dogs

  • They have super low to none shedding levels

  • They are super easy to train due to their higher levels of being eager to please their trainer(s)

Miniature Poodles

Average Size/Height: 10 – 15 inches

Average Weight: 10 – 15 lbs.

Life Expectancy: 10 – 18 years

  • They aren’t the best with other dogs, really just average with ’em
  • They are decently adaptive to their ever-so-changing environment(s)

  • They must have high levels of mental stimulation throughout the day
