Thanksgiving is nearly here and that means turkey, cranberry sauce, and in some cases a green bean casserole. But are green beans safe for dogs to eat?

While green bean casserole might not be a dog friendly dish, especially if there are fried onions or really any onions, in the recipe, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the veggie itself is off the menu. In fact, green bean casserole is not the only way to enjoy these beans during the holidays, so what does this mean for Fluffy and their desire to help clean the kitchen?

Are green beans safe for our dogs to eat? And can they enjoy them fresh or cooked?

Can our pups safely eat green beans?

According to the American Kennel Club,

"Chopped, steamed, raw, or canned—all types of green beans are safe for dogs to eat, as long as they are plain. Green beans themselves are not only safe for dogs, but veterinarians also recommend them as a healthy treat. Best of all, dogs seem to love them."

The only problem comes when we add seasonings, butter, and other ingredients to the mix. This means that if you made a fancy dish with your beans that includes things like garlic, butter, onions, and salt, your pup can’t have them.

And at Thanksgiving especially, it is important to pay attention to what all is being included in a recipe if you are thinking of offering a nibble to your dog. Considering all the fatty foods we consume at the holidays, it is important that we not incorporate those things into our dog’s diet.

When it comes to the beans of it all, the only way to give these to our pups is if they remain plain. And while they can be cooked or raw, the real key to offering them to our dogs is keeping it simple.

So while green bean casserole might be off of Fluffy’s menu, that doesn’t mean they can’t have the beans themselves.

What do you say fellow dog lovers? Did you know this about green beans? Is this a veggie you offer to your pup? We want to know.
