Tesla dog driving down highway is cool….and scary

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 09: A Tesla Model X is parked in the Central Station during a media preview of the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop on April 9, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is an underground transportation system that is the first commercial project by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. The USD 52.5 million loop, which includes two one-way vehicle tunnels 40 feet beneath the ground and three passenger stations, will take convention attendees across the 200-acre convention campus for free in all-electric Tesla vehicles in under two minutes. To walk that distance can take upward of 25 minutes. The system is designed to carry 4,400 people per hour using a fleet of 62 vehicles at maximum capacity. It is scheduled to be fully operational in June when the facility plans to host its first large-scale convention since the COVID-19 shutdown. There are plans to expand the system throughout the resort corridor in the future. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Somewhere out there in the United States, there’s a small white Tesla dog cruising down the highway….or something like that.

While some of our friends among the Dogs of Twitter (looking at you, Puppsy) occasionally pose for photos behind the wheel of human vroom machines, this is a terrible idea to actually play out in reality.

This was spotted by a writer for the car news site Jalopnik, or technically by her husband, and then he sent her the link to a Reddit thread and she wrote up the story.

It was originally posted in a thread called “Oddly Terrifying” by the user MountainousOutset, who shot a video of the doggo in the front seat of a Tesla Model X.

A Tesla dog appears to drive down the highway in a new Reddit video.

The Tesla Model X is a self-driving car, or at least has a fully automatic mode, which can apparently be started by switching into autopilot and applying a bit of pressure on the gas pedal for a moment.

So this driving dog can’t actually be steering and it was filmed as a prank, which is kind of hilarious and equally scary – what if the road had been more crowded?

It definitely gives a new meaning to the term “road dog,” however….and seems like an excellent recipe for creating fresh roadkill. Don’t do this, people.

For a much safer driving dogs experience than this Tesla dog, we recommend watching the animated kids series Racer Dogs, a late-2000s predecessor to Paw Patrol following a group of anthropomorphic canines as they pilot race cars around a variety of Hot Wheels-style tracks.
