Have you heard of the Christmas Pickle? Do you know the story behind this unique tradition? And have you noticed all the pickle dog toys this holiday season?

Lately, we have been seeing a lot of holiday pickles popping up in the toy aisles for dogs. At Petco, there were like nine different holiday pickles to choose from if you wanted your pup to get in on the tradition. While browsing the dog toys at Target, we came across the BARK St Pickolas’ Stocking Dog Toy. And that doesn’t even touch on the pickles we have found in dog aisles in other stores.

So what exactly is with this Christmas Pickle madness? Well, it turns out that there really is an entire tradition that centers around this holiday pickle. And while the amount of dog toys that have popped up in 2021 has made us pay attention to this tradition, it actually makes sense to lean into the idea of the Christmas Pickle.

What is the Christmas Pickle?

For some people this might be a “lesser known tradition,” which makes sense since it seems to have originated in Germany. However, the story of the Christmas Pickle is one where a pickle shaped decoration is hidden on the Christmas Tree.

Whoever finds the hidden pickle is said to be gifted with either good luck in the new year or a reward. For some this is just a sign of good fortune, while for others there is a true prize that is given to the one who finds the Christmas Pickle in the tree.

Over the years, the pickle has become more of an ornament than an actual veggie in a tree. But now, it seems that the tradition has hit the dog toy aisle. And we are here for it!

Whether it is the tradition itself or the cuteness of the many dog toys we have come across, we are really here for the fact that the Christmas Pickle has become a staple of the 2021 holiday season for our dogs.
