We have heard about the grocery shortages and concerns about our holiday dinners, but for some pet owners now it is impacting their animal’s canned food. And it’s not just dog food that is being impacted, it’s cat food too.

For most of us, we know about the shortages in ketchup packages, oat milk, and regular canned foods. And while the USDA might be pointing out that it’s not technically a shortage and rather a “disruption in the supply chain,” as shoppers looking for these products it is a shortage. They don’t have it, so therefore you are short on supplies.

Needless to say that as ABC 7 in Buffalo is pointing out, right now pet owners are also seeing shortages when it comes to their canned food for both their feline and canine friends. And because of this “supply chain disruption” there are even price increases when it comes to getting what canned food is in stock.

Canned food shortages are leaving some pet owners concerned about finding their pet’s favorites

One of the reasons for the shortage has to do with issues with aluminum cans. The supply simply isn’t meeting the demand and it is a problem that has been growing for a while, but was exacerbated by the pandemic.

Another issue is getting the ingredients that typically go into a number of the canned foods so many pet owners pick up. Whether it is the issue with the cans or getting the ingredients, some dog and cat food brands are having to shake things up and try new ingredients, new textures, and flavors in order to get pet food on shelves.

As long as you and your pet are willing to be flexible, there are still food options out there to choose from. But if you have a picky eater on your hands, you may run into some problems.
