There are certain fruits (and vegetables) that we automatically think of when it comes to the Fall. And one of those fruits is none other than apples. From apple and pumpkin picking to baking up delicious pies, there are certain activities that we just relate to the season and the produce of this time of the year.
Often times, we stock up on these goodies in order to make treats for friends and families. But what happens when you end up with way too many apples and you have an adorable dog who gives you those puppy eyes while you’re baking and chopping? Well then you may want to know if it is actually safe for your dogs to eat those excess apples.
Basically, we just want to know whether or not dogs can actually eat apples.
Are apples safe for dogs to eat?
Well our pups are in luck! According to Bakersfield.com, which compiled a list of both vegetables and fruits that are safe for dogs to consume, apples are in fact safe for our dogs to snack on.
Of course, just because apples are dog safe, that doesn’t mean that they can just eat all that they want. Instead, they should only be given this fruit in moderation. And not only that, but we need to be very careful about the seeds in the center of the fruit.
Apple seeds actually contain cyanide which is toxic for our pups. Plus, the core itself (which is also the home of those toxic seeds) is also a potential choking hazard.
Knowing that it is generally safe for our dogs to eat apples, that means we can also use them as part of a homemade treat for our pups. And not only that, but since they are a Fall fruit, we can use them in a seasonal treat for the holidays as well. Bring on all the Halloween and Thanksgiving treats. (In fact, we may end up digging up plenty of treat recipes to make the upcoming holidays delicious for our dogs and us.)
