When it comes to healthy and refreshing snacks, apples and grapes top the list, at least for humans. But are they safe for our pups to eat?

As dog owners, we all know that there are certain things we can’t feed our pups. And yet, when we sit down to enjoy a treat or snack, our pups often try to lay a guilt trip on us, because we aren’t sharing with them. While we may think that fruits like apples and grapes would be good for our dogs, there is a lot more to the story.

The reality is that while fruits and vegetables might be healthy for humans, they don’t necessarily have the same effect on our dogs. In fact, between apples and grapes alone, one is pet friendly, while the other is clearly entrenched on the do not consume list.

It turns out that when you are eating those refreshing slices of apples and individual grapes, only one of these fruits are actually safe to let your pup steal from you.

According to Bakersfield, apples are in fact a dog safe treat, while grapes are a no-no. And even with apples being allowed, there are some things to pay attention to when letting your pup snack alongside you.

When it comes to those apple slices, remember to start small to make sure your pup can handle the fruit (new and different things can upset our dog’s stomach). And make sure never to give your pup an entire apple. Not only are the seeds in apples toxic, since they contain cyanide, but the core of an apple is not going to break down enough to safely pass through your pup.

Grapes on the other hand are a definite no when it comes to giving your furry friend a treat. In fact, it is very important to avoid grapes entirely because they are highly toxic to dogs. Not only can ingesting grapes lead to potential kidney failure, but this can even lead to death. And while we are talking about grapes, raisins are another no go. In fact, if you think your pup has eaten either raisins or grapes, make sure you take them to the vet and pay attention to any negative symptoms they may have.

Although grapes and apples might be healthy treats for humans, our dogs are much more sensitive than we are. And that means making sure we are very careful when we are indulging in our favorite fruits.
