First Dogs share their condolences over the passing of the Queen’s five month old puppy, Fergus
Sad news from the royal family, as Queen Elizabeth‘s five month old Corgi puppy, Fergus, has passed. And the First Dogs are sending their condolences to the monarch via their social media accounts, The Oval Pawffice.
According to Vanity Fair, Prince Andrew gave the Queen two puppies in February as a gift to cheer up his mother while his father, Prince Phillip was in the hospital. While it was said that Queen Elizabeth would likely not be a pet owner again after she lost her Corgi, Vulcan, back in October, when her son gave her two Dorgi puppies, which are a cross between a Dachshund and a Corgi, it seems that she embraced the pups happily.
Following her husband’s passing, the puppies, Muick and Fergus, were meant to be a sort of comfort to the Queen, and she would often take them for a walk on the grounds of Windsor Castle. However, it seems that over the weekend, Fergus apparently passed away at just five months old.
In the social media post from the First Dogs, they expressed their sadness for the Queen’s loss, saying that, “We are heartbroken. The Queen’s five month old puppy Fergus passed away. Tiny Fergus had a congenital heart problem.”
The First Dogs share a sweet post following news of the Queen losing one of her five month old puppies
While most of the news reports around the passing of Fergus do reveal that the queen is devastated by this loss, they quickly turn to other topics, such as the shocking interview Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan did with Oprah, instead of keeping the focus on the Queen and her pups. However, thanks to the First Dogs, it is clear that they are just as saddened by the loss of Fergus as we are. And of course it is thanks to them that we have an idea of what happened with the puppy and why he passed away at such a young age.
Considering the First Dogs are doing their part to represent the canine (and feline) portion of the White House, it makes sense that they would share their condolences over the loss of the Queen’s puppy. And we appreciate their compassion and ability to share in our sadness without opting for sensationalism. Of course, this the second time in less than a month that they have had to share sad canine news like this, and hopefully we won’t see anymore doggy tragedies for a while.
Not only do we appreciate the First Dogs for sharing the news about the loss of Fergus, but it was also heartwarming to read their message to the pup and the Queen.
