Lin-Manuel Miranda’s dog makes a great seat filler, it turns out, as everyone found out during the 2021 Golden Globes telecast on NBC.
Since the actors themselves were at their homes on a Zoom call, while the category presenters were in Los Angeles with Amy Poehler while co-host Tina Fey was at 30 Rock in New York City, there were a lot of awkward moments, like when Don Cheadle gestured for Jason Sudeikis to shut up during his rambling acceptance speech.
On the other hand, there were also a lot of pet photobombs, like Jodie Foster’s Yorkie Ziggy making a brief appearance before deciding that upstaging his mom was a bad idea.
The best of these was a behind-the-scenes photo Miranda posted on his Twitter account.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s dog is a chair thief.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s dog, a smallish terrier-looking doggo named Tobillo, played a role in inspiring the song “Dear Theodosia” from his Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 musical Hamilton, which can be seen on Disney Plus.
Hamilton was nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Miranda was nominated for Best Actor Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, though neither won their categories, surprisingly. (It was an odd night all night, so maybe it fits the pattern.)
We think Tobillo was on to something – that couch looks very comfortable, and the ring light would have made it extra warm and toasty, perfect for napping.
Miranda’s first stage musical, In the Heights, will have a film adaption release in theaters and on HBO Max on June 18.
Seat fillers are traditionally used to make the venue look impressive, providing a full house and then temporarily disappearing when celebrities need to be on camera in the audience.
Novelist Neil Gaiman once filled the role at a big awards show, which he found to be an interesting experience worthy of memorializing in the titular essay found in his nonfiction collection The View from the Cheap Seats.
