With the Super Bowl fast approaching, it seems time to look at a 2020 bowl season recap to see how the canine schools of Division I college football fared in the postseason.

Every week the football dogs among the sporty Dogs of Instagram loyally supported their favorite teams, making sure to wear the appropriate attire.

Many of the schools using canine mascots endured difficult seasons on the field during the 2020 season, and so not many actually played in bowls. On the other hand, many vet schools did qualify, so we’ll count them as well.

Our 2020 bowl season recap looks at how the canine schools of college football fared.

While usually we separate the canine mascots from the vet schools, this time we will simply relate the scores we care about by chronological order of when the game was played.

The Mountain West’s Nevada Wolf Pack started things off from our perspective, defeating Tulane 38-27 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to finish at 7-2.

Conference USA’s Louisiana Tech Bulldogs were crushed in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, falling 38-3 to Georgia Southern. They ended the year at 5-5.

In the Cheez-It Bowl, the No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys topped the No. 18 Miami Hurricanes 37-34 in a Big 12-ACC matchup, as OK State wound up at 8-3.

In the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, Holland the Pup‘s No. 7 Florida Gators were soundly thumped by the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners 55-20 at the Dallas Cowboys’ home of AT&T Stadium. Florida finished out an all-conference SEC schedule at a very respectable 8-4.

In the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, the Big Ten’s Wisconsin Badgers won 42-28 over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to finish out at 4-3.

In the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, Bully’s Mississippi State Bulldogs narrowly defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane of the American Athletic Conference by a 28-26 final, score, though this was overshadowed by a massive brawl afterwards. Mississippi State finished with a 4-7 overall record.

Staying in the SEC, Uga’s No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs beat the American champions No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats 24-21, finishing at 8-2 after their Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl triumph. (Also, disappointingly, bearcats are not felines at all, but instead a kind of weasel.)

The Auburn Tigers were defeated by the Northwestern Wildcats 35-19 in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl, wrapping up at 8-5.

Reveille the Collie’s No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies sound triumphed over the ACC’s North Carolina Tar Heels 41-27 in the Capital One Orange Bowl, finishing at 9-1 (with their only loss to national champion Alabama).

Big 12 runner-up No. 10 Iowa State faced Pac-12 champion No. 25 Oregon Ducks in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, with the Cyclones storming away with a 34-17 victory. For the 2020 season, ISU finished at 9-3.

In the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, the North Carolina State Wolfpack lost a close one to the Wildcats of Kentucky, coming up on the short end of a 23-21 final score to finish at 8-4.

Finally, the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes topped the No. 2 Clemson Tigers 49-28 in one of the College Football Playoff semifinals, before getting clobbered by the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide 52-24 in the College Football Playoff National Championship. They wrapped up at 7-1 (including playoffs) as the Big Ten Conference champions, despite some shenanigans to get to that point.

Because of the pandemic, the Bahamas Bowl, TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl,  LA Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Military Bowl presented by Perspecta, New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Quick Lane Bowl, Redbox Bowl, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and the Mercari Texas Bowl were all canceled.

Thus ends our 2020 bowl season recap, and we hope the canine schools playing spring sports have safe seasons that turn out well performance-wise, if possible. For more college football news, analysis and opinion within the FanSided Network, see our sister site Saturday Blitz for more information.
