What are our 2020 AKC National Championship picks?

The telecast of the 2020 AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin is here on ABC this afternoon, and so it’s time to unveil the Dog O’Day 2020 AKC National Championship picks.

This is the pinnacle of the American Kennel Club dog show calendar, so it’s a huge honor to place in your group.

Taking part this time are site co-expert (editor) Wesley Coburn and columnist Holland the Pup.

1.00 point goes to a group winner, 0.75 for a second-place finish, 0.50 for third and 0.25 for fourth, while if our backup pick places, that’s worth 0.50 for first, 0.375 for second, 0.250 for third and 0.125 points for fourth.

Now, let’s dig into our 2020 AKC National Championship picks!

Herding Group

Wes: Both of my picks are just because they’re fun and versatile – Sheltie is my primary pick, and then the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as my backup.

Holland: 1. Berger Picard (because it sounds like burger and I love burgers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning used to have player with the last name Picard) 2. Belgian Laekenois (they look kinda fluffy and Belgium is close to Holland!)

Hound Group

Wes: Whippet, because of their big wins over the past few years, and the Scottish Deerhound is my backup because of Claire’s win at the NDS in November.

Holland: 1. Bluetick Coonhound (for my buddy Dixie on The Pack on Prime) 2. Greyhound (in honor of them finally stopping Greyhound racing in Florida)

Sporting Group

Wes: Golden Retrievers rule! They’re pretty and athletic and basically perfect. The Cocker Spaniel is my backup in honor of Lady.

Holland: 1. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (OMG, it’s a Dutch dog…wooohoo!!) 2. Labrador Retriever (I mean, who doesn’t love a Lab?)

Non-Sporting Group

Wes: Schipperke is my primary pick here, and the Bulldog gets the backup due to all the good Bulldogs from Dog Twitter.

Holland: 1. Schipperke (because they have short legs like me!) 2. Xoloitzcuintli (because I learned of them while watching the Mexico episode of The Pack on Prime)

Terrier Group

Wes: In honor of Wishbone and Bark-Andre Furry, gotta go with the Jack Russell Terrier. The Westie is my backup because of McDuff

Holland: 1. Kerry Blue Terrier (because my dad’s uncle used to show Kerry Blue Terriers in Toronto!) 2. Lakeland Terrier (because there is city called Lakeland just outside of my hometown of Tampa and a lot of my dad’s friends live there)

Toy Group

Wes: Hard to go against Bono the Havanese here, but the Pomeranian will be my backup pick due to Wasabi’s dominance. .

Holland: 1. Brussels Griffon (I mean, just look at them, so cute if you ask me!) 2. Affenpinscher (because their cute little face looks almost like a Brussels Griffon)

Working Group

Wes: Going with the Boxer, since Wilma has been one of the top dogs in this category. Backup pick is the Doberman, because they’re majestic.

Holland: 1. Portuguese Water Dog (because I loooooove water) 2. Rottweiler (because I think these dogs get a bad rap but they can be really sweet!)
