Are pears safe for our dogs to eat?

There are so many fruits and veggies that we humans enjoy, that we sometimes want to share with our pups. But we know there are some that aren’t safe. Are pears one of the safe options?

According to the American Kennel Club, it turns out that pears are actually safe for our dogs to eat! However, just because it is safe for them to indulge in a piece of pear every now and then, that doesn’t mean they should be eating this fruit every day. And not only that, but they should definitely be avoiding the seeds and core. The other addendum to our pups being able to eat pears is that they cannot eat canned pears because of all the sugar and syrup.

One of the main reasons we want to be careful with how much pear our pups are eating is because too much can lead to upset stomach. At the same time, the seeds can be toxic and also act as choking hazards.

Our pups can safely eat pears – but how much?

When it comes to how much pear our pups can eat, veterinarians suggest that we stick to around 10 percent of their food intake for the day. However, we would stick to maybe a small section, no more than a quarter of the pear chopped up.

Basically, we wouldn’t feed our dog more than a single slice every once in a while, which means this is more of a treat than anything else. We definitely won’t be tossing a full pear at our pups, but there is nothing that says we can’t give them a piece when we are munching on one ourselves.
