Why you shouldn’t use hand sanitizer on your dog

Right now, we all have a checklist when we walk out the door. Not only do we grab our masks and wipes, but hand sanitizer has become a true essential of our everyday life. However, that doesn’t mean it should be a part of our dog’s life.

According to Today, it seems that more people are grabbing the hand sanitizer in order to clean off their dog’s paws. However, this is absolutely the wrong thing to do. In fact, the FDA has issued a statement about this trend to warn dog owners of why this is not a good thing for our pups.

With more and more hand sanitizers being scrutinized for the ingredients that they contain, it makes sense that officials would be quick to warn us not use these products on our dogs.

Hand sanitizer can actually be hazardous to our dog’s health

In a tweet from the FDA, they shared why we should not be using this product to clean off our dog’s paws. The social media post says,

"Attention Pet Owners: Do not use hand sanitizer to clean your pet’s paws. It can cause poisoning if absorbed through the skin. Hand sanitizer products can make your dog sick if eaten."

Instead of gabbing the sanitizer, we should instead opt for something as simple as soapy water or even dog-friendly wet wipes. Even a regular disinfectant wipe might be better than using a traditional hand sanitizer.

After taking your pup for a walk, you may want to wipe down their paws, but we have to be cautious when it comes to what we use. It’s better to stick to the basics like soap and water, especially right now when so many products are being re-examined to determine if the chemicals they contain are actually safe for us to use.
