Stray is an upcoming PlayStation 5 video game that stars a cat.
Stray is our leading candidate for favorite PlayStation 5 original video game so far. Since we love games about pets here at Dog O’Day, and are also big fans of mysteries, a game about a detective kitty sounds like it fits right into our wheelhouse.
When the first PS5 news broke earlier this week, we noticed it in passing, but a feature on Stray from LADBible caught our attention.
The game was developed by French company Blue Twelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, the company behind rhythm-based fantasy game Sayanora Wild Hearts.
While it doesn’t include any actual gameplay footage, a trailer for the game was put online on the official PlayStation YouTube channel shortly after it was announced.
According to a press release from Annapurna, “Stray is a third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed neon-lit alleys of a decaying cybercity and the murky environments of its seedy underbelly.
“Players will play as a stray cat, roaming surroundings high and low, defend against unforeseen threats and solve the mysteries of this unwelcoming place inhabited by nothing but unassuming droids and dangerous creatures.”
This sounds like an incredible adventure, honestly. While the “unassuming droids and dangerous creatures” part sounds a bit over the top, as does the future cyberpunk setting, becoming an alley cat sounds like an intriguing adventure.
And that’s not even counting the part where the cat wears a backpack and solves mysteries.
And speaking of mysteries, what happened to all the people? We see grafitti on the walls that say “No escape” and “RIP humans,” which doesn’t bode well. How did they orange kitty get the backpack?
Almost all of the signs seem to be in Japanese, so either this story takes place in Japan or they’ve become the dominant culture in this world, which could be interesting from a worldbuilding perspective.
We want to know the answers to these questions!
Stray will also be available in PlayStation 4 and PC formats as well, with a release date of sometime in 2021.
