Stephen Colbert opens up about his dog, Benny

When it comes to telling it like it is, Stephen Colbert has no problem giving us his thoughts on everything from current events to movies and entertainment. And that has not changed just because he is working from home.

In a special piece for InStyle, Colbert opened up about one very special member of his family and team, his dog Benny. Not only did the talk show host open up about how Benny came into his family’s life (he is a puppy from his sister-in-law’s dog, Millie), but also how he got his name and the pup’s southern roots.

However, while the piece gave us a lot of lovely moments and insight into who Benny is as the pup of the house, we were here for him as the pup of The Late Show.

More from Dog of the Day

If you have been tuning in to watch The Late Show at Home with Stephen Colbert, then you have likely seen Benny pop up every once in a while. And it turns out, this pup is far from camera shy. Instead, the talk show host described him as being “camera indifferent.”

Benny doesn’t care that his dad is filming a TV show and honestly, he isn’t all that into cues and direction either. However, if you want to give him cheeses or meats, he will give you what you want.

Apparently, this is a purely transactional experience for Benny. And yet, we can’t help but think that Colbert is kind of loving having Benny with him for his show.

In fact, while the talk show host said he thought it might be a “rude awakening” for Benny when people start going back to work and leaving him behind, it sounds like Stephen Colbert is already making plans to include his pup in work at the studio. As he pointed out, “my office allows dogs, so maybe not.”

Watching so many news anchors, talk show hosts, and other professionals having to work from home as we all practice social distancing has been fascinating. And one of the best parts has been meeting all of the pets that are at home waiting for everyone.

Having dogs like Benny pop up as adorable scene stealers has been one of the greatest things about all of these at home tapings. And we love that even Colbert is enjoying working with his dog.

The fact that he took the time to open up about Benny and all the things he loves and the way he is with his humans was proof that working from home can act as a lovely reminder about the magic of our pups. After all, Colbert does sound like he plans to bring Benny to work with him, even after filming in studio resumes, and we are here for that kind of energy from our talk show hosts.

Have you been enjoying seeing all of the pets that keep stealing the show on these at home episodes? Are you a fan of Benny too? Tell us in the comments.
