Christina Aguilera’s dog stole the show by being so unimpressed during her segment on the Disney Family Singalong special Thursday night on ABC.
With the lyrics printed on the bottom of the screen and a bouncing mouse head keeping the tempo, it was very similar to the Disney Singalong videos that were put on VHS during the 1990s, which is how I (Wesley) first was introduced to many of the classic tunes.
Numerous Disney and ABC stars past and present took part, everyone from Full House‘s John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) to the stars of High School Musical and non-Disney people like country singer Thomas Rhett.
The yellow Labrador Retriever, whose name and gender we unfortunately don’t know, calmly napped on the couch beside the pop star as she belted out the Elton John radio version of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King.
This is one of the best Disney songs ever in the first place, and in the second, Christina Aguilera has one of those voices that stops you in your tracks anyway, so from a performance standpoint, that was epic.
But then that the dog was so totally unconcerned with Mom singing again, that was what made it really amazing.
Aguilera is well-documented as a dog-lover; her best pal, a 17-year-old Papillon named Stinky, unfortunately crossed the rainbow bridge in 2018.
Aguilera has a long history with Disney, being part of The Mickey Mouse Club cast with fellow pop stars Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and the actors Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell.
She also sang the end credits version of “Reflection” in Mulan. (Though it sounds like her in the end-credits song “For You I Will” from Space Jam, that’s actually sung by someone named Monica.)
Aguilera has also been a longtime coach on The Voice, forming a friendly rivalry with fellow coach Blake Shelton. Team Xtina has been a part of the show for six of the 18 seasons (1-3, 5, 8, 10), and she worked as a part-time adviser for season 7. That is the third-longest coaching stint on the show after Shelton (18 seasons) and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine (16 seasons).
It’s safe to say that Christina Aguilera’s dog was one of the highlights of the special.
