NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr and his girlfriend Sherry Pollex have adopted a new dog.

NASCAR Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr and his longtime girlfriend Sherry Pollex have adopted a new dog, becoming the latest celebrities to do so during the COVID-19 pandemic, including actors Kyle ChandlerSkyler Samuels and Lili Reinhart and singer Miley Cyrus.

Dog O’Day learned of this news Wednesday morning in a video interview Truex and Pollex filmed with Fox Sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak on the NASCAR on Fox Facebook page; it was likely announced late Tuesday afternoon on the Fox Sports 1 show NASCAR RaceHub.

The dog is a five-month-old yellow Labrador Retriever puppy from Illinois named Charlee, who is currently in training to become a therapy dog.

Pollex is a cancer survivor, so they often do a lot of children’s hospital visits with their charity, the Martin Truex Jr Foundation. Charlee will be a perfect companion to help with those efforts.

Truex currently pilots the No. 19 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing, with primary sponsorship from the dog-friendly company of Bass Pro Shops, and has a best finish of 14th through four races this season. Other teams he’s driven for include Dale Earnhardt Incorporated, Michael Waltrip Racing and Furniture Row Racing.

For his NASCAR Cup Series career, he has 26 wins, 19 poles, 102 top fives, 205 top 10s, nearly nine thousand laps led and the 2017 series championship.

Truex has not competed in the two IRacing Pro Invitational Series events run this year, though many racer dogs have watched, and Alex Bowman‘s Lab Finn and Daniel Suarez’s Papillon Emma have both climbed behind the wheel, each causing wrecks.

At present, it is highly unlikely that NASCAR will be able to return at their target date of May 7 at Martinsville Speedway, if at all this season, due to coronavirus restrictions.
