This Thanksgiving, Purina is urging dog owners to share why their puppers are the best with the hashtag #DogThanking.
For each post with the hashtag #DogThanking on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, Purina will donate $1 to Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), which supports a variety of programs, including the Pets and Vets program, which turns rescue dogs into service dogs able to deal with anything from PTSD to depression or anxiety, depending on training.
Dog O’Day learned of this initiative through People Magazine, who interviewed longtime entertainment reporter Maria Menounos about the program.
Menounos had a small role as a skiing nurse in the 2005 Fantastic Four and a recurring role as Jules on The WB’s One Tree Hill, and has also had an occasional side gig as a professional wrestler with the WWE.
She has also successfully survived a brain tumor, as her Bichon Friese Winnie played a large role in her recovery.
“She helped caretake for me and my mom after brain surgery,” Menounos told People.
She also has a rescue German Shepherd named Maximus who provides both security and humor.
“He brought the smile back to my face,” Menounos told People.
The #DogThanking campaign began in 2015 and is now in its fifth year. One of the other charities the program has been involved with was the AKC Canine Health Foundation, which, as their website states, is “the largest nonprofit funder of of health research focused solely on dogs.”
The 2019 National Dog Show presented by Purina will air on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, at noon across all time zones on NBC, hosted by John O’Hurley and David Frei. It will likely feature a segment devoted to the best of the #DogThanking posts submitted.
