Secret Life of Pets 2 director explains why Patton Oswalt was the perfect voice replacement for Max

Now that Secret Life of Pets 2 has arrived in theaters, director Chris Renaud is explaining why Patton Oswalt was the perfect choice to voice Max.

Secret Life of Pets 2 is in theaters now and that means we get another glimpse into the things our pets do when we are not around. However, for the second movie besides new characters being added to the mix, we also had a casting change.

Following news that Louis C.K. was being dropped from the sequel, the hunt was on for a new actor to voice our heroic pup, Max. Which is where Patton Oswalt comes in.

For Secret Life of Pets 2, Oswalt has stepped up to the plate and taken on the role of the anxious, sensitive, but completely lovable terrier, Max. And we are all pretty excited by this cast addition, including Chris Renaud the film’s director.

In speaking to Collider, Renaud went into a bit of detail about why he believes Patton Oswalt was the perfect choice for taking on the voice of Max in Secret Life of Pets 2. According to the director, the goal when looking for a new voice for Max was to find someone who could help the stay true to the character as he was established in the first film.

Chris Renaud explained that, “It was just about trying to find something that stayed true to the character that we’d established, but also giving it some distinction within that, and Patton just made it his own, instantly.”

Having an actor who can step into an already established role can be tricky, but clearly Oswalt knew what he was doing. And based on what we have seen, we think he did a good job. Not only does he stay true to the Max we already know and love, but he adds to his personality in a way that makes sense for the character.

Secret Life of Pets 2 may have needed a new voice for their leading pup, but the outcome seems to be excellent. And with the movie in theaters now, fans can find out for themselves if Patton Oswalt was the right man for the job.
