The Secret Life of Pets is getting a sequel in 2019.
2016 animated film The Secret Life of Pets, from Illumination Entertainment (the company behind recent Dr. Seuss adaptations and the Despicable Me franchise), turned out to be a surprise hit, and now a sequel has been announced, releasing on June 7, 2019.
The original movie starred Louis C.K. (Parks and Recreation, Louie), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Ellie Kemper (The Office, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Jenny Slate (Saturday Night Live, Parks and Rec) and Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Central Intelligence).
In the first movie, Max the Jack Russell (Louis C.K.) and mutt Duke (Stonestreet) get separated from their owner Katie (Kemper), and have to travel across New York City to find her again, while avoiding being killed by a street gang of feral pets led by a bloodthirsty rabbit named Snowball (Hart).
Max’s Pomeranian girlfriend Gidget (Slate) leads a group of their neighbors, consisting of several dogs, cats, a parakeet and a guinea pig, on a rescue mission to find them.
Reviewers said the film reminded them of the Pixar classic Toy Story, and were generally indifferent to the movie as a whole.
In the first trailer for the sequel, Max goes to the vet who specializes in “behavioral disorders,” where he meets a bipolar cat, depressed hamster and neurotic dog, along with pyromaniac twin kittens.
Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Agents of SHIELD) will voice Max in the sequel, replacing Louis C.K. due to offscreen personal problems earlier this year.
Oswalt has previous experience voicing the lead role of an animated film, as he portrayed Remy the rat in Pixar’s 2007 film Ratatouille.
