DC Comics Super Pets movie in development
Warner Bros. is putting together a movie starring Superman’s best friend, Krypto the Superdog.
Warner Bros. is working on an animated Super Pets film based on the DC Comics characters, starring Krypto the Superdog and likely starring Batman’s dog Ace the Bat-Hound.
Krypto the Superdog first appeared in Superboy #210 (essentially a forerunner of the TV series Smallville), and though his exact breed isn’t really known, he usually looks very similar to a Labrador.
Ace the Bat-Hound is a minor member of the Bat-family, and is usually depicted as either a German Shepherd or English Mastiff.
Warner Bros. has screenwriter Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie) working on the script, according to Collider.
Similar to how the Russians used dogs as test subjects while prepping their original space flights, Krypto was a test subject on the rocket that Superman’s father Jor-El later placed his son into. After getting knocked off-course during its flight to Earth, Clark Kent is a teenager when Krypto finally arrives.
A Krypto the Superdog TV series ran for two seasons from 2005-06 on Cartoon Network, with Ace the Bat-Hound as a supporting character.
Together, the two pups are members of the Legion of Super Pets, which is similar to the Justice League. The film’s antagonists will likely be Harley Quinn’s pet hyenas.
Since animated movies require a lot of preparation time, the earliest release date is likely sometime in 2021.
Marvel Comics also has several semi-prominent canine characters, most notably Guardian of the Galaxy Cosmo, who cameoed in the 2015 film of the same name starring Dave Bautista.
There is also the Inhuman Royal Family’s enormous teleporting Bulldog Lockjaw, who appeared in the short-lived ABC TV series Inhumans. Lockjaw is also the leader of the Pet Avengers in the comics.
Warner Bros. is also working on a movie starring the Looney Tunes’ Wile E Coyote, titled Coyote Vs. ACME.
