In our return to Will Trent for Season 3, we start with a hit on a cop leading to both a dead cop and one who has been injured. And then we get to see where Will and Betty have been for the last few months. It turns out it’s completely out of state, and away from everything that went down at the end of Season 2.
And right away, it becomes clear that Betty is truly Will’s best friend and family. Because even though he ran away from his problems, he never left her. When he finds himself tracked down by his boss, while in Tennessee, he agrees to help on a case, after one of the suspects calls for him specifically.
Even with him back on the case in Atlanta, Betty is at his side at every turn. Not only does he have Betty with him when he goes to visit the suspect who asked for him, but she sits on his desk at the GBI offices and is even with him when a gun gets pulled on him while checking out the car involved in the cop’s murder. Basically, Betty is his right hand, pup.
But when Will heads back to his home in Atlanta, we are reminded that there is at least one other person who also loves and needs Betty, and that is Nico.
Considering that Will Trent brought Nico home to help save them from a bad situation, gave her a home and the job of watching Betty, it makes sense that she is heartbroken that she was left behind. And while she is clearly upset with Will, and rightfully so, it is her reaction to Betty that was so painful to watch. Her immediately going for Betty and giving the pup a hug and letting her know that she’s finally home is a reminder that Will‘s family is more than just Betty. And he hurt his family when he left.
With Nico taking Betty away from Will, we immediately know that she is in good hands. So it makes sense that the next time we see Will, he is without Betty.
Will Trent is back in action. And this case is hitting home in so many ways. We have a murdered cop, the same cop who might have been trying to take down corrupt cops, and someone from Will’s past who is not only being framed for that murder, but has a lot to lose as well. Season three has kicked off with a bang and plenty of Betty.
