Have you noticed your dog staring at the door more often? Is that door closed? You might be wondering why exactly your dog is behaving in this way. What could be so interesting about that door?

Recently, we started noticing that our staff pup was staring at closed doors more often. And it got us wondering why that is. Why would our dog be staring at a closed door?

In order to get some insight into this behavior, we decided to ask some experts. And we are so glad that we did, because we were genuinely curious, since we know that our pup is not the only one that we have seen do this.

Why does my dog stare at closed doors?

Carla Dusel, who is the training and education coordinator for Central Bark, gave us some insight into this specific behavior by detailing why dogs do this. So what did she have to say?

"Our dogs are extremely intelligent and are adept at pattern recognition. For most of them, they quickly grow to understand that doors are VERY important. Their favorite humans go in and out of them, the delivery person makes horrible noises outside of them, and sometimes they go through them for exciting adventures! Once they understand what a door may predict, many dogs proceed to offer them attention throughout the day. Without fail, at some point, our dogs are proven to be correct when the door does inevitably offer the next exciting transition!"

Honestly, this answer makes perfect sense and proves just how smart our dogs really are.

We also got a response to this questions from Alicia Collins, who is the founder and CEO of K9 Activity Club. And according to Collins it is as simple as the idea that, "dogs staring at closed doors might be anticipating someone’s arrival. Dogs have far sharper senses than humans and can often detect things we can’t—perhaps even sensing the presence of someone approaching before we do!"
