The holiday season is a time for family, joy, and giving. During this festive time, many homes will welcome new furry friends. Numerous videos online around the holidays show various loved ones being surprised with a new pet as a gift. What happens once the festive decorations are packed away, and we all return to our daily routine? A troubling trend emerges: post-holiday pet abandonment.

In January, after the holiday season has come to an end, there is a surge of abandoned pets being surrendered to shelters once the novelty has worn off. Research has shown that, on average, there is a 78% increase in animal abandonment nationwide. This means that shelters everywhere are overcrowded, and resources are being stretched thin.

Due to the influx of shelter intakes, it is imperative that we support our local rescues and decide to adopt from our local shelters. Be aware that this kind of decision should not be made lightly. These pets have already been dropped off at the shelter, so ensure that you are well-prepared before bringing one home.

If you cannot adopt at this time, there are many other ways to support your local rescues. Sometimes volunteering your time, fostering pets, and donating supplies or money can be as impactful as adopting a pet. Even the most minor contribution can make a huge impact.

So, if you are considering adding a furry friend to your life in the new year, why not start this year by choosing to adopt your next pet from these overcrowded shelters? Or find ways to support shelters near you.

"Choosing to adopt can profoundly impact the lives of two animals—the one you bring home and the one who fills the newfound space in the shelter."
