When I was growing up, we had Chow Chows. These fluffy beasts can be so loving and sweet and as I grew up, I never realized that these pups are actually not that popular. That being said, the breed was in the top 10 of popular dog breeds in the 1980s, which likely contributed to our owning these beautiful dogs most of my life.
With over 200 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), you might be wondering where the Chow Chow falls in terms of popularity. I was actually surprised to see that they are still in the top 100, but sadly they are actually 88th as of 2023.
The temperament of the Chow Chow might be a big reason that these fluffy pups have fallen out of favor. As the AKC points out, these dogs are very serious and dignified, they are not often good with other dogs unless they were raised with them, and they are highly protective. In fact, I would say that the Chow Chow might be a perfect guard dog because they are extremely vigilant.
However, there is no denying that the Chow Chow can also be highly affectionate. These pups love their people. While they tend to be one person dogs, they will form a pack with their family.
But what does all of this mean when it comes to you and your personality? What does owning a Chow Chow say about you?
What owning a Chow Chow says about you and your personality
Much like the Chow Chow, someone who owns these pups is likely more serious and very cautious about who they allow in their inner circle. You are definitely a bit more guarded than most, but once a person is part of your life, then you are going to be loyal to them.
Similar to your pup, you are likely a very independent person. You are protective of your peace and the people you care about, and you are likely a very studious individual. Whatever it is that you enjoy, you get very involved in learning about it and trying to be an expert in your own way.
Chow Chow owners believe in the idea of the found family and they embrace them once they are part of their lives. And in a lot of ways, these pups remind you to take a break, even as they tend to be very vigilant in their own way.
Chow Chows can bring a lot of joy to your life, but you just have to remember that they also appreciate their personal space, so if they aren't in the mood, they will let you know.
