Paw Patrol quickly grew in popularity after its premiere in 2013. Families with children and dog lovers alike quickly fell in love with the six main characters who went around helping the people and animals in their town of Adventure Bay. But in addition to the main six, even more characters have been added during the show's more than 10-year run.

Naturally, this had led fans of the show to wonder what dog breeds are represented on Paw Patrol . Some of the breeds are quite obvious, but others... not so much. Here is a comprehensive list of which breeds you'll see on Paw Patrol. Which character is your favorite?

What are the different Paw Patrol dog breeds?

Chase - German Shepherd

Chase is one of the most popular characters on Paw Patrol. His job is police work, including directing traffic, and he is also a spy in later episodes. So, it makes sense that Chase is a German Shepherd, as German Shepherds are the most famous police dog breed since they are very intelligent and highly trainable. It also makes sense why Chase is one of the most popular characters. German Shepherds consistently rank in the top five most popular dog breeds according to the American Kennel Club, coming in at #4 in 2023.

Marshall - Dalmatian

Marshall is another fan favorite. This firefighter pup is also the medic of the group. His name is a play on fire marshal, which is someone that investigates fires and enforces fire codes. Dalmatians have long been associated with firefighters, as Dalmatians used to run alongside horse carriages before the invention of fire trucks because they are equipped to run long distances and weren't afraid of the horses. So, a Dalmatian is the perfect choice for Marshall the fire pup.

Skye -Cockapoo

Skye was the first female member of the Paw Patrol crew. Her job is a helicopter pilot who serves as an air medic, air transport, and aerial lookout. Skye is a Cockapoo. Cockapoos are mixed breed "designer dogs" that are a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. They are generally very playful, affectionate, and light on their feet which is mirrored in Skye's personality and which made a Cockapoo the perfect choice for a pilot.

Rubble - English Bulldog

Rubble is the Paw Patrol's construction pup, responsible for fixing damage to buildings and other structures around Adventure Bay. He drives a bulldozer, which is the perfect choice for an English Bulldog. English Bulldogs are very sturdy, so making Rubble a construction pup makes a lot of sense. English Bulldogs are also very affectionate and friendly dogs that are very lovable, and you can tell from his personality why Rubble is one of the most-loved characters.

Zuma - Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers come in three different colors: chocolate, yellow, and black. Zuma the water rescue dog is a chocolate Labrador Retriever. Labrador Retrievers are another dog breed that consistently ranks in the top five most popular breeds. As their name implies, they are used for hunting to retrieve game, particularly waterfowl, so they are excellent swimmers. Zuma reflects these characteristics as he performs water rescues in Adventure Bay.

Rocky - Mixed Breed

Rocky is a mixed breed dog, also known as a "mutt". Mutts are different from mixed breed designer dogs like cockapoos because the breeds that make them up are often unknown. So, it is not clear exactly what dog breeds make up Rocky. However, mutts are known for being very resilient and resourceful, and Rocky is the same way. He is always coming up with new inventions by reusing and recycling things that are old and broken, as well as being the mechanic of the group.

Everest - Siberian Husky

Everest was first introduced to the group in season 2 of Paw Patrol. She is responsible for snow and mountain rescues, and Siberian Huskies are famous for being snow dogs.Siberian Huskies are heroes in real life, transporting medicine to Nome, Alaska via sleds during the diphtheria epidemic in Alaska in 1925, since no other method of transportation would make it all the way to Nome. So, Everest the Husky was the perfect first addition to the Paw Patrol crew after the original six pups.

Tracker - Chihuahua

Tracker was a new addition in season 3 of Paw Patrol. He is responsible for jungle rescues. Most people agree (and it is implied) that Tracker is a Chihuahua because he is bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English. However, there is some debate that Tracker is actually a Potcake, which is a mixed breed dog that originated in the Caribbean. The debate stems from the fact that he is the same size as the other pups, making him too small to be a Chihuahua. Either way, Tracker is an adorable and fun addition to the Paw Patrol crew.

Tuck and Ella - Golden Retrievers

Tuck and Ella are Golden Retrievers siblings that were introduced in season 6. They are not primary characters, but secondary characters so they don't appear in every episode. They are known as the Mighty Twins. In addition to helping others in the Paw Patrol universe, Tuck and Ella work together to stop the villain known as Ladybird. Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds, so we're glad the creators of Paw Patrol decided to add Tuck and Ella to the mix.

Rex - Bernese Mountain Dog

Rex first came on the scene in season 7. Rex is the dinosaur expert of the group and he helps the Paw Patrol on their missions that involve dinosaurs. He's a Bernese Mountain Dog, which is a large, sturdy dog that is known for being a great companion and a great worker, so it made sense to have Rex be a dinosaur expert since dinosaurs are also large and sturdy. One of the coolest things about Rex is that he uses a wheelchair, which brings more inclusivity to the show.

Liberty - Dachshund

Liberty is the newest addition to Paw Patrol . She was first introduced in the Paw Patrol movie, but entered the series in season 9 as a secondary character who helps the Paw Patrol on rescue missions in neighboring Adventure City. Liberty is a long-haired Dachshund. Dachshunds are known for their agility and being able to fit into small spaces. Why was the name Liberty chosen? It's likely because Dachshunds were referred to as liberty hounds in the United States during World War I after their popularity decreased due to their association with Germany, where the breed originated.

These are all the pups that are currently primary or secondary characters on Paw Patrol. They all have their own special skills and abilities associated with their breed that makes them unique. The creators of the show seem to add new breeds as the show goes on, so if your favorite isn't represented yet, maybe they will be in the future as the show continues to have success.
