May is National Pet Month, and Walmart, the number one destination for pet owners, is teaming up with Best Friends Animal Society, one of the nation's leading animal welfare and rescue organizations, to celebrate. More and more people are bringing pets into their homes, but unfortunately, 61% of people say that pet ownership is costing more than expected. This partnership seeks to make it easier and more affordable for pet owners to bring a new pet into the family by offering waived adoption fees and savings on pet products.
Additionally, on May 17, Walmart and Best Friends are hosting a nationwide adoption event at Walmart stores across the country. If you're interested in adopting a new pet or helping pets in need even if you can't adopt, here are all the details about this amazing partnership!
Adoption events and waived adoption fees
With the purchase of select bags of Blue Buffalo dog food purchased in the month of May, Walmart and Blue Buffalo are donating up to $550,000 to Best Friends Animal Society. These funds will cover adoption fees at six Best Friends locations across the country:
- Bentonville, Arkansas
- Houston, Texas
- Kanab, Utah
- Los Angeles, California
- New York, New York
- Salt Lake City, Utah
On May 17, Walmart and Best Friends are also hosting adoption events at select Walmart locations across the country, with no adoption fees. New adopters will receive goodie bags, and there will also be giveaways and sample opportunities.

Savings on more than 2,500 pet products
In addition to adoption events, Walmart of also offering savings on thousands of products during National Pet Month. Dog and cat owners can save on products from their favorite brands, such as Blue Buffalo, Purina Pro Plan, and Fresh Step kitty litter. Additionally, Walmart is relaunching Ol' Roy, its private brand, with a new veterinary formula and recyclable packaging.
But it's not just dog and cat products that pet owners can save money on. They can also save on products for small pets, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits, and even supplies for chickens and birds.
