The French Bulldog reigns supreme as the favorite dog breed for a second year
For the second year in a row, the French Bulldog is reigning supreme as the most popular dog breed, usurping the Labrador Retriever once again. Considering the Lab was the most popular breed for more than 30 years, it was bound to get knocked out of the top spot eventually. However, it is a bit surprising to see the French Bulldog staying in the top spot for another year in a row.
Perhaps the reason we are a bit surprised by the breed getting a second year in the top spot is because of the recent surge in popularity for Chihuahuas. Plus, the continued popularity of the Labrador Retriever made us think they could regain their top spot. However, we should note that the Lab is still in the second spot for popular breed.
According to USA Today, right behind the Labrador Retriever, we have the Golden Retriever, which is also not surprising. Both Retriever breeds are well-loved and have a lot to offer for families. And of course, both breeds share a number of similarities, including average life spans between 10 and 13 years.
Beyond our top three, the fourth most popular dog breed was the German Shepherd, which has also been in the top five for years. And our fifth most popular dog breed is actually the Poodle. Considering the Poodle can be good for people with allergies, it makes sense that they would be a popular dog breed.
Honestly, all five dog breeds at the top of the popularity list make sense, especially when we think of how long they have already been relatively popular.
The fact that the French Bulldog is a friendly, loving dog is perhaps a big reason why they are so popular. While they may be a bit more expensive than a Labrador or even a Golden Retriever, they are still great family dogs. And of course, their size makes them great for apartment living and smaller homes. Plus, they do tend to travel well!
Any of these popular dog breeds would make a great addition to a family and we highly recommend learning more about all five of these pups.
Are you surprised to see the French Bulldog in the top spot for popular dog breed for a second year in a row? Is there any other dog breed you would have expected to see in the top five for popular breeds?
